The drive from San Diego to Temecula wine country is 60 miles north on the 15, taking 60–90 minutes depending on traffic. Best windows: weekday off-peak (10 AM–2 PM) heading north, after 7 PM heading back south. Worst: Friday afternoon north and Sunday afternoon south.
The drive from San Diego to Temecula wine country is one of the most under-rated day trips in California. It’s an hour without traffic, the wine country sits in beautiful rolling hills, and you can be back in San Diego for dinner. It’s also possible to do it badly. This guide is for visitors and San Diego locals who want a day trip that actually works.

The Drive
From central San Diego (Hillcrest, Downtown, North Park) to Old Town Temecula is roughly 60 miles north on the 15 freeway. Realistic drive times:
- Weekday off-peak (10 AM–2 PM): 60–70 minutes
- Weekend morning (8–10 AM heading north): 75–90 minutes
- Friday afternoon (2–6 PM heading north): 90–120 minutes — avoid
- Sunday afternoon (3–7 PM heading south back to San Diego): 90–120 minutes — avoid
The 15 is mostly easy driving, but it’s a busy commuter and weekend route. The two windows that always slow down: the Rainbow Pass climb out of Fallbrook (sometimes 15–20 minutes added), and the merge in Temecula proper at the 79 (5–10 minutes added on weekend afternoons).
Where to Start: Old Town vs. The Hills
Two distinct geographies, both in Temecula, with different vibes:
The Hills (Wine Country East of the 15)
Rolling vineyards, hilltop tasting rooms, big estate wineries. Take the Rancho California Road exit off the 15. This is what most people picture when they think “Temecula wine country.” Best for a full afternoon, multiple stops, and a sit-down lunch at a winery restaurant.
Old Town (West of the 15)
Walkable historic district. Restaurants, breweries, urban tasting rooms (including PAMEC). Take the 6th Street or Old Town Front Street exit. Best for a more compact day where you park once, walk everywhere, and can mix wine, food, and shopping.
The smartest day trips combine both: morning in the hills, afternoon and dinner in Old Town. You can do one without the other but you miss half the experience.
The Ideal San Diego Day Trip Itinerary
Here’s a workable template that gets you home before bedtime:
- 9:30 AM: Leave San Diego. Coffee in the car.
- 10:30 AM: Arrive at first winery in the hills. Pick something serious — Doffo, Robert Renzoni, or Mount Palomar. Tasting flight, take it slow.
- 12:30 PM: Lunch at a winery restaurant — Block 5 at Leoness, Pinnacle at Falkner, or Pizzeria at Robert Renzoni. Sit. Eat real food. Drink water.
- 2:30 PM: Second winery, smaller this time. Cougar, Foot Path, or one of the De Portola boutique spots.
- 4:30 PM: Drive into Old Town. Park once.
- 5:00 PM: Walk Old Town. Browse. Optional brewery stop.
- 6:00 PM: Dinner reservation in Old Town. Old Town has dozens of options — Gaucho Grill, 1909, E.A.T., Crush.
- 8:00 PM: Final glass on the PAMEC patio while the sun goes down.
- 9:00 PM: Back on the 15 south, home by 10:15 PM.
What Not to Do
- Don’t try to hit five wineries. Two is the right number for a day trip. Three at most. Five and you’re not tasting anything, you’re just drinking.
- Don’t drive yourself if you’re going to taste seriously. Hire a driver, take a guided tour, or have a designated driver in the group.
- Don’t skip lunch. Wine tasting on an empty stomach by 2 PM is how the day collapses.
- Don’t leave Temecula at 3 PM Sunday. The 15 south backs up brutally. Either leave by 1 PM or stay until after 7 PM.
- Don’t rely on the GPS for the wine roads. Cell service drops in spots. Have a rough plan.
Weekend Trip Option
If a day trip feels rushed, an overnight is meaningfully better. Old Town has hotels and Airbnbs. Stay Saturday night, walk to dinner and bars, sleep, do brunch and one or two tastings Sunday morning, then drive home before the southbound 15 backs up. The math works out better than a one-day push, and you get to actually see Old Town at night.
Where PAMEC Fits in a San Diego Day Trip
We’re the right end-of-day stop. Open until 8 PM Thursday through Sunday — most other Temecula wineries close at 5 or 6 — which means you can do your hill wineries early, eat dinner in Old Town, and finish with a glass on our patio at 7:30 PM as the sun goes down. Walk back to your car parked nearby. Drive home calm.
For first-time visitors from San Diego who want something different than the big-estate experience, ask for our amber Vermentino or our natural Sangiovese. These are wines you literally can’t get anywhere else in the valley. See our visit page for hours and directions.
Transportation Options
- Drive yourself. Cheapest option. Designated driver is essential.
- Hire a driver / luxury car. $500–800 for a 6-hour round trip from San Diego. Best for couples or small groups who want zero hassle.
- Limo or party bus. Best for groups of 6+. Most San Diego limo companies do Temecula day trips.
- Wine country tour. Several operators run guided wine tours from San Diego. Book the small-group versions for a better experience.
- Uber back. Cheaper than people think. About $80–120 from Temecula to central San Diego.
