WE MAKE NATURAL WINES

Decanting can separate sediment or change a wine through air exposure. Those are different goals, and neither means every red or natural wine needs a decanter.

Decide what you are trying to accomplish

If a bottle has sediment, careful pouring into another vessel can leave that deposit behind. If you want to explore how air changes aromas, you can compare a small amount over time. Start with a taste before committing the whole bottle. A wine that is already expressive may not need extra handling, and a delicate older bottle can lose character with prolonged exposure.

Try the glass before the grand gesture

Pour a little, smell it, then revisit after a few minutes. Gentle swirling provides some air exposure without a large decanter. Notice whether the wine becomes more expressive or simply different. There is no universal hour-long rule that works for every variety, vintage, and style. Clean, odor-free glassware matters more than having a dramatic vessel on the table.

Get advice at the point of purchase

When choosing wine at PAMEC, ask whether the current bottle benefits from air and whether sediment is expected. Record the answer with the vintage so it remains useful later. If decanting at home, keep the wine away from heat and direct sun. Sparkling wines require different considerations because pouring and exposure can reduce their bubbles, so do not apply still-red advice automatically.

A question worth asking

Should I decant every natural wine?

No. Natural wine covers many styles and bottle conditions. Taste first and ask for guidance on the specific wine instead of using the category as a decanting rule.
